A holiday that became something more

It Started With One Hungry Child

It was meant to be a day off — a beach, the sun, a holiday in Boracay. But kindness rarely keeps to a schedule.

On the streets of Boracay — watch the moment unfold.

Everyone around was busy enjoying the day. Music, laughter, the easy noise of people on holiday. Nizi was soaking it in too — until he noticed a small face that didn't match the mood.

A child. Hungry. Not asking for much — just hoping for something to eat.

So Nizi did the simplest thing a person can do: he got that one child some food. He could have stopped there. Most people would have. Instead, he kept walking along the beach — and slowly, quietly, he began to notice others. Another child. Then another. Kids the holiday crowd had walked straight past.

By the time he reached the end of the sand, he wasn't walking alone. A little group of homeless children had gathered around him — and there was only one thing left to do. He took them all for a proper feed at McDonald's.

For one afternoon, kids who were used to being invisible got to sit down, warm and full, and just be children. No cameras needed, no plan, no foundation banner — only a man who couldn't look away.

That, in the end, is the whole story of Nizi Bhandari: he sees the one everyone else misses — and then he sees all the others too.

"It started with one child. By the end of the beach, it was all of them. You can't un-see a hungry kid — so don't try. Just help."
— Nizi Bhandari
